March 29

Area:
White Pine

Elevations, slope angles and aspects:
7500-11000’, angles to 40°, northerly aspects.

Avalanche activity:
Two naturals from early morning winds, one off the top of Red Baldy and the other mid slope on the western portion. Several slides were ski cut out on Red Baldy.

All were within the wind effected snow, from 15-40’ wide,

running up to a coupla hundred feet and 4-6” deep. At least one more natural was observed during the day from the wind effect. No other recent activity observed.

Slopes skied:
Red Baldy, undercut lake peak north facing and upper Boulder Basin.

Snow surface and conditions:
Storm snow had settled to around 6”. An inch or so was added during the day. Snow along the upper ridges was affected by east-northeast winds, with shallow and sensitive drifting, the result. Ski cutting was initiating slides in those areas into the afternoon. Cloud cover preserved the dry snow all day.

Weather:
Partly cloudy to overcast, with lowering clouds and an instability shower in the late afternoon. Winds were from the east-northeast in the morning, decreasing and changing to a more northerly direction by afternoon. Moderate temperatures.

Evaluation:
Snow is mostly stable. Sluffing within the new snow was minimal. There is a lingering localized hazard in upper elevation wind affected terrain of sensitive but shallow wind drifts mainly on west and northwest facing.
